| Meet John Leask. John is
a fourth generation Stewart Island fisherman. His knowledge
of the islands history, nature, and fishing is outstanding.
You can enjoy a day out with John on his boat "Mareno" Catch
your own lunch which John will cook on board. Blue cod, fresh
from the sea and home baked bread is John's speciality. With
his boat you can visit the nature reserve of Ulva Island and
walk in the native bush which is a bird sanctuary. From the
boat you will see many sea birds, and perhaps Blue Penguin,
Seals and Sea lions. This day out with John is always a highlight
for our guests.
On Stewart Island we stay in a small lodge or B&B.
The population of the island is centered on Halfmoon Bay and
is only around two hundred people. Most of the island is uninhabited
and is being made into a national park. It is one of the worlds
most southerly settlements. On the land also native bush and
birdlife abound and there are pleasant bush tracks for hiking.
If you wish to take some extra time another option some guests
have enjoyed is a few days cruising aboard the comfortable
56' ketch "Talisker". This allows you to explore more of the
islands coastline, pristine harbours and of course the amazing
freshly caught and prepared seafood! |
